The Healthy Paws Foundation is honored to be able to help pet organizations across the country save homeless pets. One way in which the foundation hands out grant money is via a campaign called the Rescue Race. The most recent Rescue Race concluded in November, and many deserving animal rescues and shelters received grant money from the Healthy Paws Foundation to support their organizations in helping homeless pets.
We reached out to our November 2019 Rescue Race participants to catch up with them on how things have been going over the past few months.
Donna from PoundHounds ResQ in New York updated us about several senior pets that were saved from euthanasia at New York Animal Care Centers (NYACC):
Shadow: Shadow was an owner surrender at 10 years old they had no time for him. He soon caught kennel cough and then was placed on the euthanasia list.
King: King is another senior dog at 10 years old facing euthanasia. He came into the NYACC as a stray and was almost killed but we were able to save him as one of our fosters wanted to save him.
Barbie: a 20-year-old cat given up because the owner didn’t have any time!!! She too was placed on the euthanasia list. Thank God we had someone to take her. Unfortunately, she passed a week later. But at least she didn’t pass away at the shelter.
Snowball: Another 15 year old dropped off at the NYACC. Owner surrender. The dog was very neglected. We vetted him as he needed it.
Beyonce: Although Beyonce is a young dog as all our rescue dogs we save them off the Euth List. She was adopted out and then returned. She is having major issues with people and dogs. We sent her to boot camp for 5 weeks to train her to make her next adoption stick.
Rosebud: Another throw away senior who at 12 years old, was thrown away like garbage.
Thanks to Healthy Paws, we had the funds to vet these dogs and place them in homes that will care for them. As you can imagine, taking on seniors is a major undertaking and we feel these seniors need to be in a home and not a shelter.
A representative from HART for Animals, Inc. in Maryland said:
One of the animals that recently benefited from the grant was a kitten named Sparrow. He was brought to us to be euthanized because he had already lost one eye and the other looked as if it had exploded. Fortunately, HART is an animal adoption center, which incorporates a full-service veterinary clinic, and Sparrow did not have to be euthanized. His ‘exploded’ eye was removed and the other was surgically cleaned. Then, one of our staff members offered to foster him while his eyes healed. Within 10 days, Sparrow’s lovely personality had convinced his foster mom that he was eminently adoptable. And so it was that Sparrow lost his eyes but found a home, where he is deeply loved! Sparrow is only one of the 13 animals that we have already helped with the proceeds of the grant. Some of the other animals required less invasive procedures but – to the suffering animal – it meant wonderful relief. An example of that was Frisco, a male pit-bull mix, who arrived in terrible distress and required major tooth extractions. These are two happy examples of the work we do every day!
