For humans, potato chips, corn chips, and tortilla chips are a staple snack at parties and sleepovers. Their delicious, addictive flavors are irresistible to people of all ages. Though just as delicious and irresistible for dogs, chips don’t offer any nutritional value. Though the occasional missed crumb here or there shouldn’t hurt, it’s best not to share chips with your dog if you want your dog to have a happy, full life.
Hazards of sharing chips with dogs
Because chips are frequently referred to as junk food, it shouldn’t be a surprise to learn that they offer no health benefits of any kind to your dog.
Chips are usually covered with a significant amount of salt, which is a dangerous ingredient for animals. If they consume too much salt, they could suffer from salt poisoning. Muscle spasms, diarrhea, seizures, vomiting, stomach pain, insatiable thirst, and nausea are just a few symptoms of salt poisoning. In severe cases, it could cost your pet his life.
Calories are another problem. Chips are made up of mostly carbohydrates and unhealthy fats, neither of which offer any nutritional benefits to your dog. Because of this, chips are high in calories, and consuming too many can lead to canine obesity, putting your dog at risk for cancer, kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other problems. For the sake of your dog’s safety and well-being, it’s best to avoid feeding him chips.
The powders and spices used to add flavoring to chips are another hazard. Many of these powders contain ingredients considered toxic to dogs, like garlic and onion. At the very least, your pet may experience stomach discomfort, but the consequences could be worse.
When you spoil your dog with unhealthy snacks, they may be much less motivated to eat their nutritionally balanced food, depriving them of the vitamins and nutrients they need.
We know it’s hard to resist those puppy dog eyes, but don’t give in to their begging. Show your dog you love him by feeding him healthy, balanced food and fresh veggies instead.
