The quick answer: Not recommended.
Hold the cheese, please, because it’s best if your cat doesn’t eat it. In our myth buster article about cats and milk, we discussed the fact that cats, in general, are lactose-intolerant. This means that cats have a hard time digesting dairy products, including cheese. When cats consume foods they cannot easily digest, this can lead to tummy troubles including gas and diarrhea. In addition to the unpleasant task of having to be present for these symptoms, your kitty won’t be enjoying the discomfort of an upset digestive system either.
Being that cats are obligate carnivores, their bodies thrive on meat proteins. Because a significant percentage (30-70%) of most cheese is fat, it’s not exactly the ideal snack for cats.
Can cats eat cheese?
Yes, technically cats can eat cheese because it isn’t toxic to cats. We don’t recommend intentionally sharing cheese with your cat, but you shouldn’t be worried if she gobbles up a few pieces of shredded cheese that fell onto the floor. Cheese made from cow’s milk or goat’s milk are both technically safe for cats to eat.
Cheese concerns for cats
- Avoid letting your cat eat blue cheese– this shouldn’t be too difficult as the average cat likely isn’t tempted by blue cheese anyway.
- Richer cheeses may present a greater threat for tummy troubles such as vomiting or diarrhea.
- As with anything, moderation is key. Limit your cat’s consumption of cheese as much as possible, because if your cat eats too much cheese, you’re bound to deal with the consequences of an upset kitty tummy.
